One of our favourite pieces of art in a room is a fireplace. Although they serve a practical purpose, they are also the foundation of any room, serving as a unique focal point and enhancing the many textures of the room.
Fireplaces usually assist to tell the tale of the room, whether they are made of elaborately carved stone or antiques that were recovered from reclamation yards. So join up and take a seat by the fire as we provide our best fireplace advice.
1. DO use antiques
Sitting by the fire has been a tradition for ages, and there is something incredibly romantic and nostalgic about doing so while reading a book or enjoying a glass of wine. A unique antique fireplace is a surefire method to give a space a lovely aged appearance.
With its slightly burnt and exquisitely worn stone mantel, the fireplace at Charlotte Street Hotel exudes an air of authenticity.
The Covent Garden Hotel’s fireplace boasts a gorgeous decorative stone face and a wooden surround. One of the many layers of history in this enormous yet comfortable space is the interaction between the wood panelling and the carved stone.

If your fireplace is plain, accessorising it and dressing it up with collections is a terrific way to make it the room’s attractive main point.
My kitchen’s little hearth is highlighted by a substantial collection of antique charges displayed on a plate rack. I set a colourful assortment of glass vases and candlesticks on the mantle to reflect the light entering the space.
We constantly search for amusing and quirky curiosities, like these conversing ladies atop the fireplace in the foyer of the Ham Yard Hotel. They add a playful and unanticipated touch to the majestic limestone.
This pleasant drawing room’s magnificent old French fireplace has been decorated with wooden sculptures, a toy boat, and logs in the bottom cubby. All of these straightforward components work together to produce a curated appearance.
Instead of the usual roaring fire, there is a floral cluster burning in this fireplace. If your fireplace is primarily decorative and not frequently utilised, adding interesting items like this painted bouquet or a small puppet theatre can breathe new life into a drab fireplace space.

A “faux” fireplace can appear to have been there forever if you build out a portion of your wall to accommodate the interior of the fireplace.
We give the appearance of a very authentic and functional fireplace by painting the back of the fireplace black and occasionally including a simulated fire.
